The Chipanda system, which was installed in 1960, serves 532 households. Each aqua-privy block serves four households, and immediately outside its toilet compartment each household has a water tap and a sink which discharges its sullage into the aquaprivy tank (Figures 7.1 and 7.2). The tank effluent discharges, via a 100 mm asbestos cement connector pipe, into a 150 mm asbestos cement lateral sewer which runs between most of the compounds. Originally the settled sewage was treated in a series of waste stabilization ponds, but these were abandoned when the settled sewers were connected to the city's expanded conventional sewerage system. |
