Population Densities
These were estimated at 15 and 50 m2 per caput for the centre and periphery of the settlement, respectively.
Diameters
Initially, diameters were to range from 110 mm in the upper sections to 125 mm in the lower sections. These were subsequently changed to 125 mm throughout the network. The hydraulic design was based on Manning's equation. Diameter selection was based on a maximum proportional depth of 50 per cent. Maximum proportional depths were 30 per cent and 45 per cent in secondary and primary pipes, respectively.
Velocities
These ranged between 0.55 and 2.85 m/s with slopes of 2.925 per cent across the whole network. The maximum trench depth was 0.70 m, with a mean value of 0.35 m.

Low-Cost Sewer Design
Phase A
The overall aim of the project was to collect wastewater from the three drainage basins of the settlement, treat it at a wastewater treatment plant (WTP) close to the settlement, and then use the treated wastewater to irrigate agricultural land in the north of the island [15 ha of barley (for animal feed) and 125 ha of vineyards].
The original design, submitted in March 1993, had the following characteristics:
HDPE pipes with diameters ranging from 110 to 125 mm to be laid under all the main pathways of the settlement (HDPE pipe was chosen because it can be obtained in rolls of 100 m);
the main pipes collecting wastewater from basins C and B to end at two pumping stations, passing their flow to the end of the main pipe from basin A; and
